As a songwriter, I know the power music can have over us, power to create and prompt different emotions. Sometimes we hear a song and it can take us straight to a memory from our life, and link to a specific moment or emotion that we experienced. Music can bypass the brain and go straight to the heart, sometimes before we even know the lyrics to a song we find ourselves humming the melody.
Music is universal, and in the Philippines, we hope to be able to bring music to people all across the country. We want to organise concerts for people who would never have the chance to experience something like that, for people who have never left their villages or towns, people who can’t afford to pay for tickets.
Songwriting is, at it’s most basic level, storytelling to music, and the Philippines is a country full of both beautiful and heartbreaking stories. We want to tell these stories through music and through the lens, people’s struggles, dreams, their passions… And to me, telling these stories is in some ways like writing a song, only in a different way.
